“Fermata” was completed in Hong Kong amid the “Umbrella Movement” and “Occupy Central” – a political confrontation between the pro-Government and pro-Democratic groups. The work attempted to create a much-needed pausing minute of peace – momentarily liberating people from the fight.
This art installation was made by LAAB in collaboration with Chailie Ho Fashion Studio and Allan Au – an interdisciplinary team of architects, fashion designers, media artists and engineers.
13 Umbrellas were hacked to become the bones of 13 Jellyfish, dressed in a skin of feather-weight silk. Each Jellyfish transformed independently as a robot and changed its colors according to the rhythm of the music.
“Fermata” engaged with the mood of people by orchestrating a tempo with transforming mechanical architecture, lighting and music. As its name depicts, the artwork gradually mitigated the tempo of environment and approach a moment of serenity.
