Colourscape weaves three modern classic elements— PMQ (architecture), MT Tape (material), and Bauhaus weaving (technique)— turning a grey courtyard into a colorful, interactive public space.
Once a residential space, the architecture of Police Married Quarters (PMQ) was designed to enhance interaction and neighborhood encounters. The courtyard space in PMQ hosts different happenings, overseeing by people on upper levels.
MT Tape is a Japanese washi paper masking tape with a hundred years of brand history. Using Bauhaus weaving technique, we weaved PMQ’s courtyard with the primary colours of MT Tape, such as blue, pink, and yellow, and turned the grey courtyard into a “colourscape.”
Inspired by the form of MT Tape, different curved mirrors, such as rolls, half-circle, and pins, were installed. These mirror surfaces reflect the tapestry on the floor, visually blurring the interface between distortion and reality, abstraction and clarity, image and movement. These colorful distortions also encourage people to be playful and to interact with the space creatively.
As people dance, jump, and run, their movements become another layer of spectacle and points of interaction for people standing from the upper levels.
