— “Love at First Sight” by Wislawa Szymborska
Wislawa Szymborska’s poem inspired Jimmy Liao, the famous Taiwanese illustrator, to write the story “A Chance of Sunshine,” in which a man and a woman who lived on the same block always turned in different directions and missed each other. It’s a story about love lost and found in the course of serendipity.
LAAB first upstaged this poetic and beautiful story as Art Window for Hermès at the Taipei Taoyuan Airport Terminal II. Instead of mannequins, our design used aerodynamic curves and lighting to portray body figures. We used digital fabrication to die-cut white polypropylene sheets into aerodynamic fins, forming the figures of white bodies on a black stainless-steel backdrop. Together with the Hermès products and accessories, we reproduced the scenes where the couple meet each other with luggage in their hands and reunite at the airport.
The success of the first window art installation has led to its adaptation to the international airports in Tokyo and Guam telling different local stories.
