A university restaurant that embraces its heritage
1887 is a restaurant and an alumni chamber at the HKU Med (Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong). The Hong Kong College of Medicine was founded in 1887 and later evolved into The University of Hong Kong. Among the College’s early alumni, the most renowned was Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of modern China.
A strong sense of heritage is expressed by the materials selected for 1887. The vert (green) color, walnut timber, and brass metal used in the chamber space are elements found in the Coat of Arms of the university. The fluted wall features bring texture and depth to the finish and enhance the light playing off the ridges.
The continuous walls create four distinctive chambers in the fan-shaped site—the kitchen, the restaurant, the alumni room, and the VIP space. The chambers are connected by the widely opened arch portals, which can also be separated into individual spaces by the bespoke sliding doors.
The alumni room was designed to be convertible for different functions including seminar, press conference, private dining room, or an extension of the restaurant. Opening the big sliding door reveals an alcove and a doorway designed for VIP, a pocket space for dining, meeting, and private entrance/exit.
