Yoho playscape is a series of art installations in Yoho Mall, Yuen Long. A residential community of young families, Yoho forms an important gathering node where parents and children have fun and spend their quality time.  The concept of “play” is often associated with children. In Yoho Playable Art, we want to design the play experience in a way so that parents can play with their children. We used the architecture languages of dots, ovals, and spheres to create four sets of playable art — “Color Circus”, “Flying Roof”, “Infinite Loop”, and “Rocking Boom.”

Color Circus

Color Circus is a sign created by four big letters Y, O, H, O.  These letters become a playground for children to sit on, crawl through, jump up and down.

Flying Roof

Flying Roof is a set of hanging chairs under colorful canopies.  Inspired by the hand motions of swing dance, the structural poles are slanted with connecting canopies. On breezy sunny days, the intersecting canopies cast a comfortable shadow.

Infinite Loop

Infinite Loop is a castle-like playground slide.  We widened the slide, added a small tunnel and a child-friendly staircase.  We also inserted pockets near the castle entrance so that both parents and their children can climb and slide.  A visible beacon, the lighting sphere echoed with the full moon to celebrate the mid-autumn festival at the mall opening.

Rocking Boom

Rocking Boom is a teeter-totter built around a movable labyrinth maze game.  The movement of the teeter-tooter controls the direction of the ball, which can only reach its destination when there is a perfect balancing force.
